Both my parents are from Uganda, and as a kid I heard so many stories of their lives growing up in East Africa. I am always in awe when I hear his stories. It just seems like an extraordinary life that they had lived growing up in East Africa and eventually finding their way here, to Canada. We've always talked about planning a trip to go back and see the lands where they grew up, where they were educated and where they started their young adult lives. Initially it was planned as a graduation trip after university. But once I realized how crippling my student debt was, I wanted to wait until I was more financially stable before I went. Then it became this very big deal to me - I wanted to treat my dad to a retirement trip and show him that all of his years of hard work raising me had resulted creating a somewhat cool human being, that would do something so astonishing like this and to have a truly once of a lifetime opportunity to share in the experiences that my parents had growing up.

I’m A Broken Man On A Halifax Pier
After a year with two international travel trips, and with another very big international trip planned in the future, we thought that we would stay local for this year to take in the wonderful surroundings of our own beautiful country. For all the international travelling that we do (and are planning to do) it's amazing that we have not seen the entirety of our own country. Canada is one large country, so I don't think it is an easy task to cross all major Canadian cities off the list.

Just Around The Riverbend: AppCentrica Does Grand Bend
There was some back and forth between the management team as to who should plan the AppCentrica Fall 2016 Offsite. We have a few people who seem to miss the fall offsite due to a myriad of different reasons (new babies, weddings, etc.). The CEO thought it would be a good idea to let one of the managers who has only made it to 2 of the 5 offsites so far plan it for this year. I was a little disheartened when I heard this, because I thought I did a good job last year planning it that they would want me back at it again. Luckily, managers tend to not be do-ers. After this particular manager and one of his developers he got to sit on the planning committee did a whole lot of nothing for months, they decided to call in the expert to help with the planning (that would be me).

Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights
Anyone who really knows me knows that I hate Christmas. I absolutely despise it. I hate the clashing colours green and red, I hate the music, I mostly hate snow and I hate how you see Christmas decorations in the stores before the Halloween stuff is even on the shelves - I hate it all! It's not that I'm not a joyful person, I just didn't grow up celebrating it. So, when Christmas time was rolling around and I saw that I had some vacation days to use up before the end of the year and my bestest buddy was having a milestone birthday, I thought "why the heck not?"

La Belle Province: AppCentrica Does Montréal
The fall time is a special time for us at AppCentrica. More than just the usual like sending kids off for another school year, or watching the leaves change colour, it brings with it the excitement of the AppCentrica Company Offsite. The AppCentrica Offsite is an annual event is one we look forward to every year as a chance to reflect on the year we’ve had, learn from the successes of our colleagues, and bring the entire company together away from many of the distractions of our normal day-to-day lives. It is a chance for us to all gather and have our annual general meeting of sorts as well as an opportunity to bond with one another in more of a social context.

Luck of The Irish
You're going to need to pack your wellies for this one - Ireland promises to be rainy, but the sun does shine too! That's why it's so green and lush. We started planning our Ireland trip earlier in March to meet up with some family that would be travelling there at the same time. Why not combine family time with travel time? Exploring new lands together taught us to slow down a bit, and to take the time to share the experience with our family members.

Chasing The Northern Lights
With the whole world in front of me and the need to travel - where does one go when they are feeling the bite from the travel bug. Iceland! I've always wanted to go somewhere off the beaten path, and with stories from my dad of all these grand far-off places he wish he has visited, Iceland and Greenland were up there on the list. Since Greenland is covered in ice, that left Iceland as nothing but nice. And with all of these flight deals swirling around, it really felt like fate. So, I started planning a trip to Iceland in the summertime for the late fall/early winter when my projects would start to level out.
